Bread & Puppet: The Apocalypse Defiance Circus @ Mercer Park

Big Washer Woman with Crowd: Raphael Royer, 2022.

at Mercer Park
performance followed by an informal talk-back
rain location: Scanlon Gymnasium at Mercer Park

The Circus is coming to town!!! We are thrilled to host world-renowned, Vermont-based Bread & Puppet Theater on their fall tour with their latest production, Our Domestic Resurrection Circus: Apocalypse Defiance.

The show, says founder and director Peter Schumann, is “in response to our totally unresurrected capitalist situation, not only the hundreds of thousands of unnecessarily sacrificed pandemic victims but our culture’s unwillingness to recognize Mother Earth’s revolt against our civilization. Since we earthlings do not live up to our earthling obligations, we need resurrection circuses to yell against our own stupidity.”

After the show Bread & Puppet will serve its famous sourdough rye bread with aioli and host a talk-back moderated by Genevieve Trainor.

The company’s “Cheap Art” – books, posters, postcards, pamphlets and banners from the Bread & Puppet Press – will be for sale.

Audience members should bring their own chairs or blanket for seating, as well as sunscreen.

This engagement is supported by the Arts Midwest GIG Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, the University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts, Oasis Street Food, and Bluebird Diner.
Thanks also to the City of Iowa City Parks Department for providing space and assistance with logistics!
